We are starting this project with two schools - in both villages where Big India Farms works. One village is Chedka, a remote tribal village in Sohagpur, and the other is in Beelkhedi, a poor village in Vidisha, both in Madhya Pradesh.
The number of students there is roughly 1000+ for classes between 6th to 8th. Most of them either go to dysfunctional government schools, to take advantage of mid-day meals or to get a bicycle. But no education that can take them to higher levels of earning later in life.
A majority is also enrolled in a few one man private schools and pays upto Rs.200/- per month. The quality, teaching skills and the motivation of the teachers here is limited to what that amount can provide. The future vision or capability to lead a child to a greater success is also not there.
What is the funding required per school?
1.. For setting up the school, we need:
a. A building of 4-5 rooms , costing around Rs. 2,50,000 (2.5 lacs),
b. Furniture etc : including benches: Rs. 20,000/-
b. Accredition and similar paperwork : Rs. 20,000
c. Optional facilities:
1. Library : Rs. 10,000/-
2. Computer : Rs. 20,000/-
d. More dreams:
1. Solar lighting : Rs. 100,000/-
2. Dish TV : Rs. 10,000/-
Total (a+b+c.1) = INR 3,00,000/-
2.Running cost in first year: -
a. Ability to bring first 50 children and sustain them, including books and copies, dress and shoes : Rs. 2,00,000 (1.5 lacs)
b. Teachers cost (assuming we only take 50 free children) : Rs. 1,50,000
c. Arrangement required to take children away from labor and keep them in school (e.g. a cycle till they enrolled; mostly parents will use it but the child will be sent to school) : Rs. 50,000/-
Total : Rs. 4,00,000/- (any fee income from new enrollments above 50 shall be deducted) .
3.Running cost in second year: -
a. Ability to bring sustain 50 children : Rs. 2,00,000 (1.5 lacs)
b. Teachers cost (assuming we only take 50 free children) : Rs. 1,50,000
Total : Rs. 3,50,000/- (any fee income from new enrollments above 50 shall be deducted) .
Sustainability after 2 years (or earlier):
OUR USP is good education. I believe that if we provide that to 50 children, soon another 500 will be sent by their parents, if they can make an economic choice between the immediate opportunity cost of sending them to school versus long term benefits.
We will charge a fee of Rs.150/- per student after 50. This comes with our commitment to keep 50 going at all times.
So if over 50 students:
- we get new 100 students ,we will generate Rs. 15000 x 10 months = Rs. 1,50,000/-
- we get new 300 students, we will generate Rs. 45000 x 10 months = Rs. 4,50,000/-
At this level of 350 students, the school becomes self sustaining, including additional teacher and capex costs, to include more students.
It would be a goal to develop more schools using these two as the base, and also contributing to development of other schools.
Summary: How much we need to run 2 schools with 50 children each
1. Set up plus first year cost: Rs. 7,50,000/-
2. Second year: Rs. 3,00,000/-
Above assumes only 50 children.
Issues in Education:
1. Ethics of management and money motives
2. Management quality and vision
3. Sustainability till volumes develop in such schools
4. Teacher development, training and quality
5. Development of future of children
Our team, with support of 7avenues network and our own IIT and IIM network, has the potential to deliver on each of the above- starting with the motive, which defines other aspects as well.
We need as much support as can be given.
How do we intend to raise funding?
The overall commitment required to start is :
a. This year: Rs.7,50,000/- per school or Rs. 15 lacs for 2 schools
b. Next year: Rs. 3,00,000/- per school or Rs. 6 lacs for 2 schools
To raise this amount, the options are:
A. Donations to Big Vision project
B. 25% of commercial revenues from the Big Vision programs
How can you contribute or be a part
1. You can donate any amount above Rs.1000/-. We are trying to get tax benefits on such donations.
2. Adopt a child . The cost will be around Rs. 6000/- per annum.
3. If your company has any Donation/ Social participation scheme, please let us know and introduce.
4. Any other way you know of.

BIG-VISION PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN
NOTE: Under this program, we can take a maximum of 100 students in a city. If the demand is higher and we cannot meet it, we will conduct a selection.
This highly valuable program serves as the foundation for lasting success.
This is for mentoring children between 12 to 15 years to make them winners in future life. It is planned and delivered only by prominent alumni from institutions like IITs and IIMs.
To give a more holistic view, we also incorporate very prominent folks from all walks of life, while designing the course material.
We believe, as we have first hand experienced, that the formation of success ingredients happens much before a child joins the rat race of coaching classes and competitive world.
The knowledge available is like the walls and paints of the home, but the strength to hold it comes from foundations and the pillars. And these are laid much before, when we are not watching and more worried how the house will look like later.
Most competitive examinations, and a few times even environments inside the home and the schools, ignore these in a child.
The proofs manifest themselves year after year - many of the IIT/ IIM/ IAS folks coming from a tough background or a brilliant scientist or a business leader overcoming the toughest of situations in life and lack of resources.
It focuses on four components of lasting success:
1. Situational skills ,
2. Mental power,
3. Critical skills ,
4 Hunger for knowledge and success
We evaluate each child under this program on all four and them take them to level much higher than their peers.
Situational skills:
These are required to handle tough and unexpected situations. A few children may face such things just before critical exams, say a family event or illness but ALL of them face it in exams that matter like IIT, IIM, AIIMS because to sift the top cream, examiners want to churn using seemingly tough and surprise scenarios. This helps them identify toppers from a vast group of folks with similar knowledge, coaching and intelligence.
The situational skills' areas of focus are :
- Emotional Intelligence and Application
- Stress management
- Values for success
In this module, we use situational tests, and build it through experiential learning. One offsite camp is also required.
Mental power:
These are required to handle complex and long problems. For example, most tough mathematical questions can be broken down in small steps, if one has the logical mind. Similarly, Chemistry required great logic and sharp memory. While History, economics, etc also require a good comprehension and at a speed.
The areas of focus are:
- Memory building
- Reading comprehension
- Analytics and problem solving logic
In this module, we use stepwise techniques, delivered through tests and their individual analysis by us.
Critical Skills
These are the languages - English and Mathematics. These two form the medium for every expression across subjects. A great foundation in these two is critical for success.
The areas of focus are:
- Building logic of languages - English and maths
-Comprehensive coverage of above
- Converting complex communication into fluently expressed English
- Converting complex mathematics into simple problems
This module involves some knowlegde on building blocks, tests and individual analysis.
Hunger for Knowledge and Success
This forms the part that motivates the child to perform, using above three. But the motivation is to be generated inside and not through external orders.
In this module, we increase the level of awareness of each topic and the paths to achieve more. For example, a child who decides when in 7th that he/she will be an IITian has 80% more chances of success than one who makes up the mind 4 years later. Same goes for a cricketer or an artist or a doctor.
This is so because the mind thereafter actively works towards the pursuit of that bigger goal. And everything on the way becomes an enjoyable experience.
Duration and Fee
Duration : 6 months, 4 hours a week on weekends, with 2 camps,
Parents meetings required : 4
Batch size : 25
Maximum strength : 4 batches
Fee: Rs. 8,000/- per admission
Selection process : Through Big Vision diagnostics in school and scholarship program
